Dear Colleague,
It is my assessment that SOHO has been and can continue to be a tremendous asset to the Solar research community. As you may know, we are currently engaged in an effort to extend SOHO science operations beyond mid-1998. To help justify the continuation of mission funding, it would be very helpful if you could send the following information about your SOHO-related research to jdesselle@achamp.gsfc.nasa.gov :
Name ____________Thank you for your help in this effort.Institute ______________
SOHO Instrument(s) used ________________________
Title of work ____________________________
Status of work (in work, in press, published)________ date_____
Yours,

The second Sun-Earth Connection Roadmap Workshop was held at JPL on October
28-30, 1996. With the incorporation of material generated at the workshop,
the Roadmap is nearing completion. While still under construction, the
Roadmap web site at http://espsun.space.swri.edu/~roadmap/index.html
contains the latest information.
Please check the material and respond with any suggestions to Bill Lewis at
grl@swri.edu.

A complete announcement of the 5th SOHO Workshop, including a
registration form, was made in a recent issue of SolarNews.
Stanford University invites applications for a one year post-doctoral
position to support the Solar Oscillations Investigation-Michelson Doppler
Imager (SOI-MDI) Program which is part of the Solar and Heliospheric
Observatory satellite (SOHO). This experiment is currently in the Mission
Operations & Data Analysis Phase.
At least one appointment will be in the area of helioseismology.
Possible areas of research include local and global helioseismology,
studying the excitation and damping of the oscillations, mode physics and
inverse methods. The research may include design of observing sequences,
data reduction and theoretical interpretations of the results. The
candidate is expected to work together with the scientific staff at
Stanford, whose areas of research cover a broad range of sub areas of
helioseismology.
One of these appointments will include research into global and local
magnetic fields. In particular we are looking for a person interested
in modelling the coronal fields using photospheric observations at both
low and high resolution for application to SOHO and TRACE (Transition
Region and Coronal Explorer) and data analysis.
The Science Support Center at Stanford has substantial computing facilities
which may be used in support of the research and the researcher is expected
to work together with the software development team to develop algorithms.
Applicants must be recent Ph.D. recipients when they begin the
appointment (within the last three years prior to this appointment).
Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, astro-physics
or a related subject. The duration of the appointment is one year, with
possibilities to be renewable for a further year.
Persons interested should send a resume, list of publications, a brief
statement of research interests, and two letters of recommendation to the
following address:
Information can also be emailed to:
margie@quake.stanford.edu
or faxed at:

November 29th. Consequent to his superannuation, Prof. MR Deshpande, Sr.
Professor and Chairman of Astronomy and Astrophysics Division, Physical
Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, has been appointed as Incharge, Udaipur
Solar Observatory, Udaipur, India. In addition, Dr. Ashok Ambastha will be
joint incharge of the Observatory.
